When difficult circumstances hit, we can feel so shaken and off-balance. Almost like the very ground we thought we were standing on is giving way beneath us. It’s fair to say we desperately need truths to cling to in hard times.

Hard circumstances can create a sense of shock, especially. Life may feel surreal for a long time. Sometimes, it’s hard even to remember the truth from God’s Word, which we so desperately need during these moments.

Maybe we’ve lost a loved one, our marriage, or a job. Perhaps we’ve gotten news of a scary diagnosis, or the symptoms of our chronic illness are getting worse and never end. We all know that the list of hard times we might encounter in this world can be endless.

In such times, we are at our weakest mentally, emotionally, and physically. Spiritually speaking, we are also at our most vulnerable.

Maybe we’re wrestling with anxiety about our circumstances, or fighting off a sense of despair and hopelessness that can lead to depression. Maybe both!

The Enemy Wants to Take Advantage

This is when the enemy of our souls would love to move in on us and start playing mind games. Sometimes, in our shocked and confused state, we do our own selves in with the thoughts, doubts, and questions that swirl endlessly in our minds.

Why did this have to happen?

Why did God allow this?

How will we even survive?

My heart is beyond repair, and everything feels hopeless now!

It’s in times like these that Satan would like nothing more than to see us give in to lies about God and ourselves, bringing us down further. What follows are seven truths to cling to in hard times—truths to comfort us, strengthen us, and help us stand strong in our faith. In some ways, they’re so basic, and yet they’re the very things we can forget or begin to doubt when we’re in the middle of the storms of life.

1. GOD STILL LOVES YOU

Especially when our pain is great, we can be tempted to question God’s love for us. How can God say he loves us and then allow such painful circumstances in our lives? I’ve been there, friend!

The truth is that nothing can separate us from God’s love for us—not our painful circumstances, not our own doubts and questions. We can question God all we want, but that doesn’t change the truth of His love for us.

2. GOD CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE GOING THROUGH

One of the biggest lies we can start to believe when trouble hits is that God doesn’t care about our pain and heartache. If He did care, then why would He allow our hard circumstances in the first place?

Nothing could be further from the truth. Just because we don’t understand why He allows something in His love and wisdom doesn’t mean He doesn’t care.

He’s still our Heavenly Father who cares deeply about every single thing we go through and every tear we shed.

3. HE WILL WALK THROUGH YOUR HARD TIME WITH YOU

When trouble hits, we often feel so alone! Even those closest to us may not seem to truly understand. We can feel like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders with no one to share the burden.

The real truth from Scripture is that it’s impossible for us to ever be alone in anything. God has especially promised that he’ll be with us through hard times.

4. YOU HAVE ALL YOU NEED TO MAKE IT THROUGH

In hard times, we can feel weak, inadequate, confused, and uncertain. And many times, we are all of these things in the face of life’s storms!

Yet, in Christ, we lack nothing.

Our weakness only shows His strength more. Through the Holy Spirit within us, we have all the power, all the peace, all the wisdom and everything we need to not only survive, but to thrive in our spirits even in our darkest hour.

5. YOU CAN CONQUER THIS IN CHRIST

I used to think I was a pretty strong person who could hold up well under adversity. I’d done it as a kid, so I figured I could do it as an adult.

Until troubles began hitting me as an adult, then I began to think of myself as more of a marshmallow! You too?

The truth is though, that while life may have revealed to us our weaknesses, our God goes from strength to strength. In His power and might, we are more than conquerors no matter how tough our situations are.

6. YOU WILL EXPERIENCE JOY AGAIN

Nothing can steal our joy as Believers in Christ. When hard circumstances hit, we may not feel much happiness at all for a while, but our joy in Christ transcends our circumstances. In time, as we grieve our losses and adjust to the changes that hard times can bring, we begin to realize that our joy in Christ was there all along.

7. GOD STILL HAS GOOD PLANS FOR YOU

At times, in the middle of our storms, all we see ahead is one bleak day endlessly stretching into the next. We don’t feel like we have much of a future to look forward to. Yet God promises His people that we have a glorious future to look forward to in Heaven.

Here on earth, we also have the promise that His goodness and mercy will follow us for as long as we live. While that doesn’t exempt us from hard times, it gives us hope for the good plans He still has in store for us.

May God bless you with a sure confidence in these truths no matter what you’re facing today, friend!
