Speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible says:

The Lord Jesus himself commands everyone to repent and believe the Good News (Mark 1:15).

To repent means to do an about-face, turning away from our sinful ways and surrendering completely to God and His rightful authority in our lives. The Good News is that God has provided a way for us to be rescued from the penalty of our sins through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. This is how we begin an eternal relationship with God.

The book of Romans in the Bible explains the process of repentance and believing in the Good News about Jesus Christ:

We may believe that we are basically good people, but according to the Bible, all of us are sinners in comparison to a perfectly holy God. This is true even if we’ve only violated His standards in what we consider inconsequential ways, like telling a small lie. It’s also worth noting that God always looks at our heart attitudes in relation to Him and others when considering if we have violated His standards.

This tells us that the payment for our sins is death, which means eternal separation from God, both here on Earth and in the afterlife in hell.

The first part of this verse paints a stark picture of the consequences of our sins. Except look at the second half of the verse! God, in His great love for us and His desire to have a relationship with us in spite of our sinfulness, has offered us the way out of our dire situation.

Why did God send His only Son to Earth to die on a cross, taking on all of His wrath for the sins of the whole world? Because while it’s against His very nature to tolerate evil (Psalm 5:4), He is full of mercy, kindness, and love for us!

It’s not enough, however, to just know about God’s amazing gift of His own son to save us from our sin. The Bible says that we need to personally receive this gift to have our sins forgiven.

When we receive God’s gift of salvation through Christ, we begin a brand new relationship with God as His very own child (John 1:12) and can be assured of our entrance to heaven when we die.

Romans 10:9 explains how we can receive the Lord Jesus Christ:

You can receive God’s free offer of salvation right now by praying a simple prayer. It’s important to remember that it’s not the act of praying that saves us but a true heart change made by turning away from our sin and placing our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you’d like to talk to God about this, here is a suggested prayer you can say right now:

Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned against you. I believe that you are the Son of God, that you died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin and that you rose again, according to your Word. I believe that there is no other way for me to be saved from my sins except through faith in you alone. Lord, I am turning away from my sin and turning to you, asking you to take your rightful place as my Lord and to save me from my sins. Amen.

If you prayed that prayer and accepted the Lord Jesus as your Savior, you can be assured that you are now a child of God and that you will go to heaven to live with Him forever when you die. The moment you believed, God gave you His Holy Spirit to dwell in you (Ephesians 1:13-14) and empower you to live as He wants you to.

It’s so important that you, as a believer in Christ, find a church in your area that teaches the Word of God and start attending. If you can’t attend in person, there are many excellent churches offering online services.

There are two other important parts of your new life with Christ. One will be to spend at least a few minutes a day reading God’s Word.

Also, spending at least a few minutes a day in prayer is important. Prayer is simply talking to God and is a time for us to praise Him, thank Him for all He does for us, confess our sins (all believers still sin and need to be cleansed regularly by asking for forgiveness in prayer), and ask Him for the things we need.

May God bless you abundantly as you begin your new life with Him!
