How to Fight Spiritual Warfare and Win

If you’re like me, maybe you figure you criticize yourself enough so Satan doesn’t need to worry about attacking you. Still, the Bible is clear that as Believers in Christ, we need to know how to fight and win spiritual warfare.

Because as far-fetched as it may seem sometimes, Satan actively seeks to bring us down:

HOW TO FIGHT SPIRITUAL WARFARE: KNOW WHEN YOU’RE BEING ATTACKED

The first step in battling the enemy is recognizing when we’re under attack. Since spiritual warfare is unseen, we’ll never know for sure if Satan is attacking us. Yet some telltale clues give him away.

If you’re dealing with any of these issues, then it’s very possible you may be under spiritual attack.

ARE YOU FEELING WORN DOWN?

Of course, every time we lose sleep or catch a cold, we’re not necessarily fighting the enemy. Yet part of knowing how to fight spiritual warfare is paying attention to how we’re doing physically and emotionally.

Just like Satan tried tempting Jesus when he was hungry and exhausted from 40 days and nights in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), the enemy loves to hit us when we’re at our worst.

WATCH OUT FOR CONDEMNATION

Another clue that you might be under spiritual attack, is the condemnation that seems to come out of nowhere.

One of my favorite pastors advised us we could recognize the voice of the Enemy from the condemnation. God lovingly corrects his children, whereas Satan is known as the Accuser of God’s people.

We all get discouraged sometimes! This is just condemnation from the enemy.

Are you shooting yourself down lately? This could be part of the schemes of the enemy against you too, friend.

ARE YOU QUESTIONING GOD?

Another telltale clue that we might be under spiritual attack is when we start questioning God. In fact, this is one of the biggest red flags that can help us with how to fight spiritual warfare.

As far back as the Garden of Eden, Satan has been trying to get us to question God (Genesis 3:1:7). To cast long shadows of doubt on the goodness, love, and truthfulness of the Perfect One. The One that upholds everything and every one of us.

He knows our faith in Jesus is our one true strength. It’s our superpower. The glue that holds us together, even when our fragile lives and hopes seem to be shattering like so many shards of glass around us.

Do you find yourself asking questions like these?

  • If God really loves me, then why did He add one more burden on top of the others?
  • Why doesn’t He at least give me a little break from..(fill in the blank)?
  • Why doesn’t He answer that one tiny little prayer? The one that’s got to be in His will.

If you find yourself doubting God’s goodness, love, and truthfulness, you could also be under spiritual attack.

HOW TO BATTLE THE ENEMY: RELY ON GOD’S POWER

Once we recognize it for what it is, how do we fight spiritual warfare and emerge from the battle still strong?

Our biggest responsibility in spiritual battle is to stay in a place of obedience to God where we can rely on His power to resist Satan (for more see Do Christians Have the Authority to Rebuke Satan? from Got Questions.com).

To submit to God means consciously deciding we accept His right to rule in our lives. It means setting our minds and hearts on living according to His Word, no matter what.

And taking him off the hot seat where we question him. As though he owes us some kind of explanation for his actions!

Putting him back on the throne of our hearts is a daily conscious choice we make. Sometimes, even a moment-by-moment choice.

When we consciously submit to God, we can rely on His power to resist the enemy’s tactics.

HOW TO FIGHT SPIRITUAL WARFARE: PRAYER AND MORE PRAYER

Resisting Satan also looks like prayer and more prayer.

When we’re in the midst of a spiritual battle, it’s time to continually pour out our hearts to God. Telling Him everything that’s bugging us and everything that’s breaking our heart.

Then we tell him again.

Be sure to ask trusted Christian friends to pray for you, too. Let them know that you think you might be in the middle of a spiritual battle so they can pray like they mean it!

HOW TO OVERCOME SPIRITUAL WARFARE: PICK UP YOUR SWORD AND USE IT

The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God and the only offensive weapon Paul lists in the different pieces of armor Christians need to wear (Ephesian 6:10-18). God’s Word was also the defense Jesus used when Satan tempted him in the wilderness.

To use God’s Word as a weapon in warfare, we’ve got to know it well.

Equipping ourselves to fight spiritual battles is just one of the many reasons we need to read God’s Word regularly.

We’ve got to be familiar enough with the Bible to recognize the lies that bombard us during spiritual warfare. And when we recognize a lie, then we counter it with truth from the Word.

KEEP THE ENEMY IN PERSPECTIVE

It’s important to keep the Enemy in perspective. In God’s strength, we are more than conquerors!
