9 Levels of Angel Hierarchy in Christianity

Angels have always fascinated believers and theologians alike, serving as divine messengers, warriors, and protectors in Christianity. But did you know that not all angels are the same? In Christian theology, angels are organized into a spiritual hierarchy, each with specific roles and responsibilities.

The nine levels of angel, famously described by St. Thomas Aquinas, split into three separate tiers or choir, each with its own job to carry out God’s plan.

The Tiers of Angels

The first tier has the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, who stay closest to God and act as direct worshippers and guards of His holy throne. These top-ranking angels have the duty to uphold God’s greatness, power, and fairness in heaven. Their main tasks involve thinking about God, praising Him, and putting His direct orders into action.

The second tier—Dominions, Virtues, and Powers—links the higher angels to the world. They oversee the lower angels’ tasks, maintain universal order, and fight spiritual battles.

The third tier has Principalities, Archangels, and Angels, who work more with humans. This tier guides nations, brings divine messages, and gives protection.

Let’s take a closer look at these nine levels of angels and their unique place in the grand design of the universe.

Seraphim occupy the top spot in the angelic hierarchy, staying closest to God and always singing His praises. Their name comes from a Hebrew word that means “the burning ones,” which shows their deep love and commitment. In the Bible, Isaiah 6:2-3 paints a picture of Seraphim with six wings. They use two wings to cover their faces, two to cover their feet, and two to fly. The main job of Seraphim is to worship God and make sure His light reaches all the heavenly beings.

Cherubim

“After he drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.” – Genesis 3:24

Cherubim protect sacred places and are often shown with many faces and wings, which stand for their many sides. Unlike how people think of cherubs as sweet and fun, these creatures are strong guardians of holy secrets. You can find them in Genesis 3:24, where they guard the Garden of Eden, keeping people from getting to the Tree of Life after the Fall. Their main task is to safeguard divine knowledge and maintain the holiness of God’s presence, making them key protectors of sacred mysteries.

Thrones

Thrones are angels that stand for God’s justice and power. They serve as intermediaries between the divine and lower orders of angels. Their name reflects their job as bearers of God’s throne, symbolizing His sovereignty over all creation. Thrones have the job of carrying out God’s judgments and making sure His will is done across the universe.

In the Bible’s imagery in Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 1:15-21), Thrones have a connection to the mysterious “wheels” that go with God’s chariot. People often describe these wheels as having eyes all over, representing God being everywhere and seeing everything. The wheels mean movement and the power to cross the heavens and earth, showing how God runs the universe.

Dominions

Dominions are the first of the second-tier angels, acting as overseers and managers of lower-ranking angels. They are responsible for ensuring that God’s orders are properly executed throughout the celestial hierarchy. Dominions don’t interact d irectly with humanity as often as other angels, but they play an important role in keeping order within the angelic realm and ensuring that God’s plans are carried out smoothly.

Virtues

Virtues are known for their ability to perform miracles and inspire humans toward goodness. They are believed to oversee the natural world, ensuring that divine laws are upheld and that the universe operates according to God’s design. In Christian thought, Virtues are closely linked to the concept of grace, as they help facilitate divine intervention in the lives of believers. Romans 8:38 reflects this divine support, indicating that nothing can separate us from God’s love, which Virtues help manifest through acts of faith.

Powers

Powers are warrior angels who defend the universe from demons and make sure evil doesn’t mess up God’s plan. The  Powers fight against wickedness, highlighting their job to fight temptations and evil forces, and keep the creation intact.

It is believed that Powers are the ones who physically guard the borders between Heaven and Earth. In other words, if Cherubims are the guardians of the throne of God, then Powers are the guardians of Heaven itself. And do you want to hear something interesting? It is believed that because of this, it is often believed that when a human dies, the powers are the ones who escort their soul into Heaven.

Principalities

Principalities have the job of watching over nations and cities –they are the rulers over different areas on earth. They guide leaders and rulers using heavenly wisdom. They make sure justice, kindness, and peace are kept up. Principalities work sort of as heaven’s planners. They shape how societies think about right and wrong. They also push for God’s wishes in politics.

It is also believed that whenever we have that “light bulb” or “aha!” moment, like we just thought of something brilliant, it’s actually the act of Principalities bestowing divine knowledge on man.

Archangels

Archangels rank among the best-known angels serving as God’s main messengers to humans. Michael Gabriel, and Raphael stand out as key figures, each carrying out important tasks in Bible stories. People often picture Michael as a fighter protecting against evil powers (Revelation 12:7). Gabriel delivers divine messages (Luke 1:26-38). Raphael, on the other hand, has a reputation for healing. These examples show the different jobs Archangels do.Their presence highlights how important it is for God to talk to humans, reminding believers that God is right there in their lives through these strong messengers. Archangels don’t just protect; they also stand for hope and support

Angels, the closest to humanity, serve as protectors, guides, and messengers. They are often called guardian angels, watching over individuals and delivering personal messages from God. Psalm 91:11 highlights their role in guarding us in all our ways. These angels have the most interaction with humans, offering guidance, comfort, and protection in daily life.
