16 Instances Where the Bible Shouldn’t Be Taken Literally

Is the Bible always right? Questioning the credibility and truthfulness of the Bible may feel uncomfortable or even controversial for many people, especially Christians.

The Bible is considered a timeless source of wisdom and guidance. Many believers often view it as the ultimate guide on how to live, love, and understand the world. But what happens when we see passages that seem to contradict our knowledge of the world and science? Here are 16 Biblical events that require a little further thought and, perhaps, should not be taken literally.

The Earth Being Created in Six Days

Genesis 1 states that God created the world in six days. Some people argue that the “days” may just be a representation of longer periods of creation. With scientific evidence proving that Earth is about 4.5 billion years old, it’s highly possible that these “days” mentioned are not literal 24-hour periods.

The Global Flood of Noah

Another account taken from the book of Genesis is the story of Noah’s Ark and the global flood (Genesis 6-9). Critics question the lack of geological and archaeological evidence to support this claim. It could have been inspired by a major flooding of specific regions, such as Mesopotamia, rather than describing a truly global flood.

The Age of the Earth

If we look at Bible genealogies, it would suggest that the Earth would only be around 6,000 years old. In contrast, scientific methods such as radiometric dating indicate that the Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years. This is one of the discrepancies between Biblical literalism and scientific understanding that most critics argue.

The Creation of Eve from Adam’s Rib

“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.” – Genesis 2:21-22

This account from Genesis 2:21-22 has been debated for centuries. Is this to be taken literally? Or is this a symbolic representation of the close relationship between the two sexes?

The Exodus from Egypt

This event describes Moses leading the majority of the Israelites out of Egypt, with accounts of plagues and parting the Red Sea. Historians have yet to find any archaeological evidence to support the mass migration of an entire people out of Egypt. This lack of evidence leads them to question the historicity of this event.

The Genealogies of Jesus

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke present different genealogies for Jesus. Because of this discrepancy, many people question whether these accounts are historically accurate or just serve a more symbolic purpose.

Methuselah is said to have lived to the age of 969 years, according to the Bible (Genesis 5:27). This makes him the longest-lived person mentioned in the Scriptures. His age has sparked much debate, with some viewing it literally, while others suggest it could be symbolic or reflect a different cultural understanding of time.

The Origin of Languages

The Tower of Babel story in Genesis 11 claims that all languages originated from a single source after God confused the languages of humanity. However, linguists believe that languages independently evolved over time in different regions.

Was it possible for Israelites to take possession of the land only through divine intervention? This account from the book of Joshua is a subject of debate, with archaeological findings indicating otherwise.

The Bible’s View on Slavery

The Bible contains laws about slavery (Exodus 21, Ephesians 6:5), which are troubling to modern readers. Some interpret this as an endorsement of the practice, which raises ethical concerns today. At the same time, others argue that these passages reflect the cultural context of the time rather than an endorsement of slavery.

The Role of Women in the Church

Many Bible passages suggest that women are restricted from certain roles and authority in society and in the church. Is this a reflection of the cultural biases of the time, or is this a divine mandate? This question leads to reevaluating women’s roles based on broader Biblical principles of equality and justice.

Human Sacrifice

Bible passages such as the one from Genesis 22, where God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son are often a subject of moral and ethical concerns today. Some people view this as the Bible condoning human sacrifice. While stories like this are often interpreted as tests of faith, they still raise difficult questions about the Bible’s stance on human life.

The Doctrine of Hell

Traditionally, hell is understood as a place or state of eternal separation from God, reserved for those who reject God’s grace. However, there is debate within Christian circles about what hell actually is. Some believe in the traditional view of hell as eternal torment, while others interpret it more metaphorically, seeing hell as spiritual death or separation from God.

The Coming of the Messiah

According to the Jews, the Messiah was expected to be a political and military leader. However, Jesus’s life was quite different from this expectation. Did Jesus fulfill these prophecies, or was there a misunderstanding regarding the expectations?

Ezekiel 26 claims that Tyre was destroyed and would never be rebuilt. However, Tyre still exists today. This leads some believers to question the fulfillment of this prophecy. Others argue that the prophecy was partially fulfilled or is symbolic.

The Book of Revelation describes dramatic and quite scary apocalyptic events. These include visions of war, natural disasters, plagues, and the final judgment. These vivid scenes have led to various interpretations. Some see them as symbolic, others as literal, while others as already fulfilled.
