The Bible has covered 66 Scripture books spanning thousands of years. It extensively describes heroes like Abraham, David, and Paul. Yet, it only mentions some people in passing whose roles may seem minor or vague. Some individuals accomplished many great things and performed miracles, but not everyone in the Bible was a leading actor.
These 17 characters were included in God’s plan for humanity, even if their stories weren’t very elaborate.
Methuselah
Methuselah is famous primarily for his long life, which lasted 969 years. Little else is recorded about him apart from that fact.
Lot’s Wife
Known only for looking back at Sodom and turning into a pillar of salt, Lot’s wife warns against disobedience and longing for a sinful past.
Onan
Onan, son of Judah, is best known for his disobedience when he did not fulfill his duty of fathering a child with his brother’s widow after his brother’s death.
Phinehas (Son of Eli)
Phinehas, one of Eli’s wicked sons who engaged in corrupt practices as a priest, exemplifies a lack of integrity in leadership and demonstrates how such sinful conduct has lasting effects on future generations.
Naomi’s Husband, Elimelech
He is briefly mentioned as Naomi’s husband. Due to famine, he took his family to Moab before dying early, forcing Naomi to return to Bethlehem with her daughter-in-law, Ruth.
Korah
Korah led a rebellion against Moses but did not achieve much beyond causing division.
Dodo
Dodo is named the father of Eleazar, one of David’s mighty men. Fathering Eleazar is pretty much all he is known for.
Michal
Michal is involved in incidents such as helping David escape, but her life is marked by disappointment and barrenness.
Jair (Judge)
Jair ruled over Israel for twenty-two years without any tangible impact to note down in history.
Orpah
Instead of following Naomi to Bethlehem, her second daughter-in-law, Orpah, chose to return to Moab. The difference between Ruth’s loyalty and Orpah’s decision reveals different ways people respond to faith and family obligations.
Tola (Judge)
Tola judged Israel for 23 years, yet little is documented about his achievements.
Adah
Adah is one of Lamech’s wives mentioned in Genesis, with few other details about her mentioned.
Abdon (Judge)
Abdon ruled over Israel for eight years, which is all that is known about his time as a judge.
Huldah
Huldah was prophetess who briefly confirmed the Book of Law during King Josiah’s reign. Though small it played an important role in significant religious reform.
Jephthah’s Daughter
The tragic fate of Jephthah’s daughter due to her father’s rash vow stands out as a solemn lesson on how impulsive promises can lead to irreversible consequences in life, even if she lived for only a little while.
Eutychus
Eutychus fell asleep during Paul’s long sermon and then fell out of his window, but Paul brought him back to life again.
Salome (Mother of James and John)
Salome asked Jesus if her two sons, James and John, could be seated at His right and left hand in His kingdom when they came into power. Her brief appearance highlights themes of ambition and misjudgment regarding Jesus’ mission.
Unnoticed but Not Unimportant
Lesser-known biblical characters such as these are still mentioned to remind us that no life is too insignificant to be part of the grand narrative of the Bible. Though short, their stories offer valuable lessons and insights. Accepting the contribution of these characters helps us understand God’s plan more deeply and gives us meaning in our own lives, no matter how small we may think our roles are.
