“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
The Greatest Lie Many Christians Believe
One of the greatest burdens many believers carry is the feeling that they must somehow earn God’s love. We tell ourselves that if we pray more, serve more, give more, read the Bible more faithfully, or make fewer mistakes, then God will love us more. On the other hand, when we fail, we begin to believe that God has withdrawn from us or become disappointed with us.
This mindset is exhausting. It turns our relationship with God into a performance instead of a family. Instead of resting in His love, we spend our lives trying to deserve it.
The beautiful truth of the gospel is this: nothing we do can ever earn God’s love because His love was never based on our performance.
God did not wait for us to become righteous before He loved us. He loved us while we were still sinners.
God’s Love Came First
The Bible says:
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say Christ died for us after we had cleaned up our lives, overcome our addictions, forgiven everyone, or become faithful church members.
No. Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Before we ever sought God, He was already seeking us. He loved us before we loved Him. He had already called us His own before we ever called His Name, and this is grace
Salvation Is a Gift, Not a Reward
Many people think Christianity is about becoming good enough for God. But the Bible teaches exactly the opposite.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
Grace means receiving what we could never earn. If salvation could be earned, Jesus would not have needed to die on the cross. His sacrifice was necessary because no amount of good works could ever erase our sin. We are saved because of what Christ did, not because of what we do.
Obedience Is the Fruit, Not the Price
Does this mean our actions do not matter? Not at all. God calls us to obey Him, pursue holiness, and live lives that honor Him. But we obey because we are already loved, not so that we will be loved.
A healthy child does not obey their father to become part of the family. They obey because they already belong. The same is true with God. When we truly understand His love, obedience stops feeling like a burden and becomes a joyful response to the One who has loved us beyond measure.
When We Fail
Every believer stumbles. There are days when we lose our temper, doubt God, make poor decisions, or fall into temptation. In those moments, shame whispers, “God must be tired of you now.”
But the gospel tells a different story. Our failures do not surprise God. He knew every weakness we would have before He called us His children.
However, this does not permit us to continue in sin. Instead, it gives us confidence to run back to our Father in repentance instead of hiding from Him.
God’s love does not ignore our sin, but neither is it destroyed by it. Through Jesus, there is forgiveness, restoration, and a fresh start.
We Love Because He First Loved Us
The apostle John wrote:
“We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
Everything begins with God’s love. We worship because He first loved us, forgive because He first forgave us, and serve. After all, He first served us through Christ.
Our entire Christian life is a response to a love we did not earn and could never deserve.
Stop Trying to Impress God
Perhaps you have been carrying the weight of trying to prove yourself to God.
You feel that if you could just pray longer, give more, serve harder, or make fewer mistakes, then maybe God would finally be pleased with you.
Friend, God is not asking you to impress Him. Instead, He is inviting you to trust Him. He already knows everything about you: the victories, the failures, the hidden fears, and the silent tears. And yet He still loves you completely.
That is the heart of the Father.
Rest in His Grace
The cross settled forever the question of whether God loves you. Jesus did not die because you were worthy; He died because God is love. And nothing you do can make God love you more than He already does.
No matter what you’ve done, when you come to Him with a truly contrite heart, His grace far outweighs it all. So stop striving to earn what has already been freely given.
Rest in His grace. Walk in obedience out of love, not fear, and serve Him with gratitude, not guilt. And never forget this unchanging truth: You are loved, not because of what you have done, but because of who God is.
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me long before I ever knew You. Forgive me for the times I have tried to earn what You freely gave through Jesus Christ. Help me to rest in Your grace, walk in joyful obedience, and never forget that Your love is rooted in Your unchanging character, not in my changing performance. May my life be a grateful response to the incredible gift of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
