10 Truths About the Believer’s Authority Every Christian Should Know

Have you ever felt like you were at the mercy of life’s battles or spiritual attacks? Most believers live as though they are compelled to bow to the leading of sin, fear, and the enemy, forgetting the incredible authority they have in Christ.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, you possess divine authority not because of your personal ability but because of the finished work of the cross.

Stepping into Your God-Given Authority

This authority is more than just a theological concept; it’s a reality that empowers you to overcome sins, resist the devil, and walk confidently in your God-given purpose. Many Christians lack an understanding or fail to exercise this power, hence leaving them vulnerable to the schemes of the enemy.

This article will uncover ten important aspects of the believer’s authority: what it is, where it comes from, and how you can apply it in your daily life. By the end, you will be equipped to walk boldly, knowing you are not a victim of circumstances but a victor in Christ. Let’s dive in!

Authority Is Rooted in Christ’s Victory

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” – Matthew 28:18

When Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He defeated sin, death, and the powers of darkness (Colossians 2:15). Believers share in His victory because they are united with Him through faith.

In your case, what this means is that Christ’s authority over the enemy now extends to you, His follower.

Authority Comes Through Being Seated with Christ

“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” – Ephesians 2:6

As the verse above says, believers are seated with Christ in heavenly places. This means that you operate from a position of spiritual authority, not somebody beneath the enemy.

Your authority isn’t earthly-it’s heavenly. You are above, not beneath, the powers of darkness.

Authority Over Sin

“For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.” – Romans 6:14

Believers are no longer slaves to sin. Through Christ, they have the power to resist temptation and walk in righteousness. You can choose righteousness and walk in freedom because the power of sin is broken.

Authority over Satan and Demonic Forces

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” – Luke 10:19

Jesus gave His disciples the authority to cast out demons and overcome the enemy’s power, which is available to believers today. You don’t have to be afraid of Satan or any of his plans. You can rebuke him in Jesus’ name.

Authority in Prayer

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16

Those praying according to God’s will can confidently come before the throne of God, assured that their prayers are powerful and effective. Your prayers move mountains and align situations with God’s purpose.

Authority to Bind and Loose

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:19

Jesus gave His disciples spiritual authority to bind whatever is forbidden in heaven and loose whatever is permitted. You have the authority to speak against the enemy’s work and declare God’s Kingdom’s purposes.

Authority to Make Disciples

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

The Great Commission authorizes believers to share the Gospel and teach people to follow Christ; it is a mandate given by Jesus Himself. As a believer, you have divine backing to share your faith and disciple others, regardless of opposition.

Authority to Declare God’s Promises

“The tongue has the power of life and death.” – Proverbs 18:21

Believers have the right to declare God’s promises over their lives and situations, aligning their words with His will. Speak life and truth into your circumstances, boldly declaring God’s promises.

Authority Through the Word of God

“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” – Ephesians 6:17

The Bible is the sword that equips believers for battle against lies and spiritual attacks. Use Scripture to confront and defeat the enemy, just as Jesus did in the wilderness.

Authority Requires Faith

“According to your faith let it be done to you.” – Matthew 9:29

Faith activates the believer’s authority. Without faith, one cannot operate in the full power provided by God. Develop your faith through prayer, the Word, and worship, and you will walk boldly in your authority.

Walk in Your Authority Today

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

Well, authority given to believers is a gift from God, made available through Jesus’ sacrifice. However, Satan wants you to doubt it, but the truth remains quite straightforward: you have the power to overcome sin, resist the enemy, and live victoriously. Put on your spiritual armor, speak God’s Word, and walk boldly in the authority Christ has given you.
